What are the gospels?

Some see them as collections of stories; others view them as a type of instruction manual. They are historical documents too. However, the gospels are not objective, neutral, historical writings but the words of men who have had an encounter with Jesus the living Lord. Each gospel writer tries to convey a unique picture of Jesus to help us see the significance of the person and work of Jesus. John says he is writing to help us to trust in Jesus.
